Theatre in Education

O'Toole, J. (1976). Theater in education: New objectives for theater--new techniques in education. Suffolk, UK: The Chaucer Press.

O'Toole gives a formal definition of Theater in Eduction (TIE) and separates it from other types of educational drama and traditional theater in the classroom (namely the participation of a young audience in some capacity; physical, verbal, and in some cases creators of the work). O'Toole dismisses views that commercial theater and education should remain separate entities and offers extensive rationale as well as some concrete structures for the use of drama in the classroom. Relevant quote: the function of educational drama is to extend, deepen, and make more efficient the learning process (18).
