The Art of Classroom Management: Effective Practices for Building Equitable Learning Communities

McEwan, B. (2000) The Art of Classroom Management: Effective Practices for Building Equitable Learning Communities. Upper Saddle River. NJ: Prentice-Hall, Inc.

This book is a great resource for both beginning teachers and experienced teachers looking to create a classroom environment that is fair, manageable, and conducive to learning.  McEwan uses the word "rules" throughout the book, but can be interchangeable with the HTH preferred term "norms".  McEwan begins by emphasizing the importance of rules and how they create consistency and clarity on what is expected of them.  Methods are then given on developing these rules and how to fairly reinforce them.  A lot of focus is placed on constant referencing of class norms and how to honor those norms in our actions as teachers.  The later chapters of the book focus on "problem behaviors" and how to handle difficult situation authoritatively rather than authoritarian.
