Interdisciplinary Role Play: Nursing and Theater Students Advance Skills in Communication

Bashford, C. Reams, S. (2011). Interdisciplinary role play: nursing and theater students advance skills in communication. The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin, 77 (4), 42-48.

This article describes a collaborative effort between nursing and theater faculty to create a mutually beneficial learning experience for students in both departments. In the experiment, the nursing students interviewed and interacted with theater students who were acting as patients. This resulted in increased confidence in communication with patients for the nursing students, while the theater students were able to practice improvisation skills. This experiment provided students in both departments with a reflective learning experience.
